Both of these performances dealt with the relationship between organic life and the urban environment of Tokyo.

2012 : Super Deluxe, Tokyo : Live : Stereo by Phil Samartzis & HACO

Leaves was made in 2012 and we felt it was important to in some way respond to the events of March that year, even if in an oblique way. At the time of our visit there was a great deal of talk amongst Tokyo residents about geiger counters and where residual radiation was to be found, leaves where one such place. Japan is famously attuned to its seasons and so in time of autumn it seemed the leaves could speak to fragility of that particular Japanese moment.

2013 : Shibuya, Tokyo : Live : Stereo by Phil Samartzis & Christophe Charles

Myself, Philip Samartzis and Christophe Charles performed this work live in June 2013 as part of the Shibuya Underground Streams project at a shipping container on the Shibuya River. The Shibuya river is covered for much of its distance by streets or channeled into a sewer. The bits and pieces I shot live for the vision track were found along the path of the Shibuya River as it travels beneath Cat Street. Phil & Christophe used recordings made along water ways in Tokyo from the Sounds of Weather field work conducted in 2011.
